MANILA, Philippines - As tight as hostilities in the elims has been, the duel for the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball diadem between La Salle and Santo Tomas will go down to one last you-or-me showdown.
This after the Green Archers foiled the Tigers’ sweep bid with a 77-70 triumph yesterday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum to level the series and forge a rubbermatch for the vacant crown.

The winner-take-all duel, the first in the league since 2009, will be held on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Making adjustments based on their experience from their 72-73 setback in the first game, the Archers pounded on the smaller Tigers inside to seize control while tightening up on their perimeter defense to keep UST at bay.
With Norbert Torres (10 rebounds) and Arnold Van Opstal (14 boards) imposing their inside presence, La Salle outrebounded UST, 57-39, and had 17 more offensive boards (27-10) that they translated to 18 second-chance points (versus UST’s 6).
“It’s a do-or-die game. When your backs are against the wall, it makes you play more aggressive,” said Torres who also finished with 16 points to backstop Jeron Teng’s 19 markers and nine boards.
The Archers made 42 points in the paint, 16 markers more than the Tigers, who were trying to become the first No. 4 seeds to win the crown.
La Salle also put the cuffs on Kevin Ferrer, who coughed up six points on 1-of-6 shooting clip after sizzling with a hot 5-of-8 marksmanship from three-point territory last time.
“We just tried to take away the three-point shots of Ferrer. Now he only had three attempts. That’s what killed us in the first game,” said coach Juno Sauler.
Jeric Teng rifled in 28 big points but other than Karim Abdul (13 points, nine rebounds) no one else finished in double figures.
“Ginawa niya (Teng) yung part niya, kaya lang, yung contribution ng iba limited (Teng did his part but the contribution from the others were limited),” said UST coach Pido Jarencio.
“Hindi namin ma-stop yung bigs nila inside (We couldn’t stop their big men inside),” added Jarencio, who also lamented how Abdul and backup center Paulo Pe got three early fouls. “Maganda rin ang nilaro nila (The Archers played well). We have to step up on Saturday. At least there’s still one more game, we’re still in the hunt.”
In contrast to the early goings of their first encounter, the Archers had a blazing start this time, storming to a 21-12 lead. They had their biggest margin at 36-19 and even maintained a 77-63  upperhand going to the last 4:10.
The Archers fell into a scoreless spell from there but nonetheless secured the tying win.
La Salle will be trying to complete a come-from-behind victory in the series, similar to what the 1999 batch of Ren Ren Ritualo, Dino Aldeguer and San Juan Vice Mayor Francis Zamora pulled off in their own duel with the Tigers.
