Scholarship fund set up in memory of former Great Ayton singer

A SCHOLARSHIP fund for young North-East singers is to be created in memory of a well-loved former opera singer, who died earlier this year.
Many former pupils of Zuilmah Winterschladen are to take part in a fundraising concert held in her memory this weekend.
The event will take part at Christ Church in Great Ayton tomorrow evening (Saturday, September 21) and proceeds from the event will go towards setting up a scholarship fund to help young singers in the North-East.
Mrs Winterschladen sang with the Glyndebourne Opera Company and on national radio and television under her professional name of Zuilmah Hopkins.
She also taught many people in Great Ayton, where she lived, as well as several well-known singers from the region, including Sarah Sweeting, a resident singer at the Sydney Opera House and actress Liz Carling.
She worked as a singing teacher until two weeks before her death, on January 23.
At her funeral, on February 1, a special tribute version of the song You’ll Never Walk Alone, was sung by many of her former pupils.
The programme for tomorrow’s concert has been put together by her daughter-in-law Vivienne Winterschladen.
The concert will begin at 7pm and tickets are £10 adults and £5 children.
Advance tickets are available from Thompson’s Hardware store on Great Ayton High Street.
